In 1970 Bruce Cannon, Sr. and his wife Mary Cannon began assembling traffic barricades in the basement of their home in Greenville, South Carolina. These barricades were then in-turn rented and sold to local construction businesses in the area for safety on their projects and work sites. It was an idea gleaned from experience.
As a former engineer and heavy highway project manager, Cannon spotted the growing need for contractors to own and have their own traffic control/safety devices on hand versus repeatedly relying on an equipment rental company to provide and install each time. On the other hand, Cannon knew also that purchasing made less sense for a contractor working on short-term job. So after pondering the sales vs rental paradox for some time , Bruce Cannon Sr decided he’d just do both.
In 1982 Bruce and Mary turned their basement dream into a brick and mortar storefront—and BC Cannon Traffic Safety was born.
Servicing the Upstate of South Carolina, the company thrived thanks to their commitment to the client, honesty of their word and the quality of service performed. Embracing new advances in safety products, BC Cannon brought the latest equipment to the attention of area job sites with the single intent of making the customer and their workers safer.
Perhaps most well-known was his early usage and advocacy of ‘solar powered warning lights.’ With doubt circling around the concept of solar power in the 1970s, Cannon not only demystified the confusion of customers in regards to its benefits, he quantified and qualified those advantages for the client in real time practical applications. Citing the associated costs of replenishing batteries repeatedly in work zone lighting, Cannon laid out the logistical benefits of incorporating solar-powered illumination into construction work zones. His eagerness to utilize the industry’s most recent advances and illustrate those benefits to his customers in-turn made Bruce Cannon Sr an unspoken pioneer in the safety world—and laid the framework for what BC Cannon Company would become.
BC Cannon sells, services, and rents work-zone and road-closure equipment for jobs in SC, NC, TN, and GA.
